Psalm 27.1-3: A Basic Literary Analysis

Psalm 27.1-3 A Basic Literary Analysis

1The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell.3 Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war may rise against me, in this I will be confident.

A.    3-Fold Exaltation -Within the first three verses, David makes four distinct references to the boldness he possesses.

1.       He links this boldness directly to the nature and attributes of God, and does this by showing that his bravery derives from his faith.

a.       David makes a 3-fold exaltation of Christ’s position in his life, which he shows as the foundation piece for his courage and confidence:

I.                    The LORD is my light

II.                 The LORD is my salvation

III.               The LORD is the strength of my life

b.      Each exaltation is directly linked to an empowerment of courage and confidence.

i.        The LORD is my light….of whom shall I fear?

ii.      The LORD is my salvation…of whom shall I fear?

iii.    The LORD is the strength of my life…of whom shall I be afraid?
